Latif Nerwayi, Head of the Media Board of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) affirmed that the party’s approach to the disputed areas has always been one of unwavering support. He noted that all promises made by the PUK have been delivered, resulting in a notable rise in the party’s vote share in those areas. He stressed that the election results demonstrate that power is no longer solely determined by the number of seats; instead, it goes to those who deliver results. Consequently, the PUK remains the dominant force in Sulaymaniyah, with no rival.

Nerwayi said: “The PUK is the leading force in Sulaymaniyah. Our candidates achieved top positions in the elections, and we secured a clear increase in votes.”

He added: “Thanks to the prudent policies pursued by the PUK in Kirkuk, the leadership of President Bafel Talabani, and the promises made to the people—including electing a Kurdish governor, improving city services, and delivering across various sectors—all commitments have been fulfilled.” He added, “One measure of the PUK’s success in Kirkuk is the governor’s performance, which sends a message to all political parties: Kirkuk is in safe hands, and a strong PUK in Baghdad can deliver even more for the city.”

Nerwayi highlighted the importance of comprehensive power in representing the disputed areas. “Without doubt, the party with the largest presence in these areas—the PUK—is best placed to represent them,” he said. “We recognise the contributions of other parties and aim to cooperate in a spirit of partnership. However, the PUK unquestionably holds the lion’s share in these territories.”

Latif Nerwayi underlined that “the PUK’s strategy in the disputed areas is rooted in commitment and delivering on promises, which has been reflected in the rise in votes, as our programme is realistic and serious about implementation.”

He pointed out that the party’s actual vote share is even higher than reported, as in some areas candidates affiliated with the PUK ran under different list names, and those votes were not officially counted for the PUK.

He concluded: “The PUK succeeded despite attempts by some parties to destabilise the region, particularly Sulaymaniyah, but these efforts failed. The elections show that power is not granted by seat numbers alone but by performance and results. The PUK remains the leading force in Sulaymaniyah, and there is no alternative.”
