UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Iraq in consolidating its democratic progress, emphasising the need to form a new government promptly and peacefully.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, through his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, congratulated the Iraqi people on the successful conduct of the parliamentary elections. He also commended the Independent High Electoral Commission for its dedicated efforts in ensuring the effective preparation and management of the electoral process.
Mr Guterres welcomed the “generally peaceful and orderly” nature of the vote, expressing confidence that Iraq’s political parties would uphold the spirit of peace and respect for the democratic process while awaiting the announcement of the results. He underscored the importance of establishing a government that genuinely reflects the will of the Iraqi people and meets their aspirations for stability and development.
The Secretary-General reiterated the UN’s continued support for Iraq in strengthening democratic institutions and achieving the aspirations of all Iraqis for a peaceful and prosperous future.
As the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) nears its conclusion, Mr Guterres extended his appreciation for the Mission’s enduring partnership with Iraq’s electoral institutions, noting that UNAMI’s work represents more than two decades of electoral assistance.
