Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani received Joshua Harris, Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Iraq, to discuss the political situation in Iraq and a range of issues of mutual interest.

The meeting was held in the presence of US Consul General Gwendolyn Green, during which the political process in Iraq following the parliamentary elections was reviewed.

Commenting on the discussions, Qubad Talabani stated that Iraq needs to form a strong and efficient government capable of protecting its sovereignty and independence. He added that, in cooperation with the Kurdistan Region, outstanding issues between Baghdad and Erbil should be resolved in accordance with the Constitution.

The Deputy PM emphasised that a strong Iraq does not pose a threat to the Kurdistan Region. On the contrary, he said, the Kurds must be part of a strong Iraq to further strengthen the position of the Region.

The meeting also addressed the development process in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. In this context, Talabani noted that the next Iraqi government has a duty to create a favourable environment for development and to facilitate foreign investment—particularly from the United States—in various sectors, contributing to the economic growth of both Iraq and Kurdistan.
