Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed has highlighted the continuing impact of Iraq’s legacy of conflict on the rise of domestic violence, stressing the urgent need to turn awareness into tangible protection, and protection into law, services, and action.

In a statement on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the First Lady said: “I listened to women who survived violence. Their strength and courage inspire me, but inspiration alone is not enough. Violence must end.”

She added: “On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I stand with every woman in Iraq and around the world whose suffering is ignored, minimised, or silenced.”

The First Lady underlined that “in Iraq, the legacy of conflict continues to fuel the rise in domestic violence, with tens of thousands of cases recorded annually, and countless others going unreported.”

She concluded: “Awareness must translate into protection, and protection into law, services, and action. Let us protect our women through systems that truly defend them.”
