Two recent scientific studies have confirmed that drinking water in Halabja province meets international standards and is being delivered to citizens cleanly and without problems, according to Professor Tariq Hama Amin.

Speaking to PUKMEDIA, Professor Amin explained that the studies were carried out between 2024 and 2025 in collaboration with fellow academics, with the primary objective of safeguarding public health. “The health of our citizens was the main motivation behind this work,” he said.

He added: “We had previously undertaken serious research in the fields of health and the environment in Halabja. However, it was essential to continue our scientific efforts, which led us to conduct these studies and pave the way for future research.”

Professor Amin expressed his appreciation to the Halabja Water Directorate and the staff of the Halabja Water Treatment Plant for their cooperation.

The research focused in part on measuring levels of aluminium in the water. “A detailed assessment of this element is vital, whether the levels arise naturally in the water, through external contamination of the source, or from the use of alum in the purification process,” Professor Amin explained.

He noted that excessive aluminium levels in treated water can pose serious health risks, including kidney problems and, in some cases, a link to Alzheimer’s disease. “In certain months of the year, particularly during winter and the rainy season, aluminium levels can rise above normal. Necessary recommendations have been provided to the relevant authorities, and at present there are no problems,” he confirmed.

Professor Amin further stated that the Halabja Water Treatment Plant, when assessed against engineering and environmental standards, represents a satisfactory project. However, he emphasised that annual monitoring remains essential.

“The purpose of this study was to evaluate all stages of the water treatment process in Halabja, ensuring its capacity to provide clean drinking water to the people of the province,” he said.

“Using detailed scientific methodology, water samples were collected from all sections of the treatment plant — from the intake point on the Sirwan River through to distribution stations and finally delivery to households,” he added.

“The findings confirm that the project is functioning effectively at every stage, treating the water to international standards and ensuring that it reaches citizens in a safe and clean condition,” Professor Amin concluded.
