The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has published a statement regarding the 36th Commemoration of the Halabja Chemical Attack.

The following is the full statement:

36 years ago, the fascist Ba'ath regime carried out an attack on Halabja using chemical weapons, resulting in the death of 5,000 innocent souls and the forced displacement of tens of thousands more. The victims of genocide in the province of Halabja and the burnt land of the capital of  Sharazwr have come to symbolize the genocide faced by the Kurdish people and their valid cause worldwide.

The 36th anniversary of the Halabja disaster is a tragic memory that our people, the Kurdish movement, and all of humanity will always carry with them. The wound will not fade until Halabja and all of Kurdistan achieve the final stage of liberation, peace, and prosperity—or at the very least, recompense for the oppression inflicted by Saddam Hussein's regime—the first government to use chemical weapons against a part of its own country.

Today's Halabja need increasing prosperity, as well as a clean and healthy environment for living. After becoming a beautiful province in the Kurdistan Region, the people hope that the legal and administrative procedures to become the nineteenth province of the country would be finished. The Iraqi Parliament should fulfill its national and humanitarian responsibilities as quickly as possible.

The PUK has actively worked towards the administration, development, and revitalization of Halabja. It has also acknowledged the genocide committed there and emphasized the moral obligation of the international community to address this significant crime. In the future, it will continue to fulfill this important responsibility with increased energy, across all its parliamentary and governmental representations. It reasserts its commitment to a complete and united effort at both the regional and federal levels.
