On Friday evening, April 26, 2024, two drone strikes occurred at the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, resulting in the death of four Yemenis and injury of four others. The origin of the drones remains unidentified, prompting the initiation of an investigation.
Khor Mor field has come under rocket attacks several times over the past few years. As per the information acquired by PUKMEDIA, the attack was directed towards the same location as the previous attack. It resulted in a fire in a gas storage warehouse, leading to the halt of gas production, exports, and electricity generation from the field. Consequently, approximately 2,500 megawatts of electricity were reduced.
The origin of the drone launches is undisclosed
The governor of Chamchamal district, Ramak Ramazan, stated that emergency teams are currently conducting an investigation into the incident, and the origin of the launched drones remains unidentified.
Iraqi President emphasises the importance of revealing the details surrounding the attack
Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid expressed strong disapproval of the deliberate attack on the Khor Mor gas field.
President Rashid stated in a post on his account on X Platform: "We strongly condemn the attack on Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah. It resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, and has impacted the local electricity supply network. Such criminal acts work against the interests of the state and our citizens, threatening stability and security."
"Our security services must investigate the incident without delay and hold the perpetrators accountable. Preventative measures must also be taken immediately. Glory to the martyrs and my sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of the wounded," he added.
Qubad Talabani: A comprehensive inquiry should be carried out on the drone attack
In a statement, Qubad Talabani, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, strongly condemned the attack. He urged the Iraqi government and other relevant parties to promptly initiate a comprehensive investigation and implement significant measures to prevent the recurrence of such attacks, which result in civilian casualties and adversely affect the Kurdish people as a whole.
PUK faction: We are committed to taking all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of such attacks
Simultaneously, the PUK faction in the Iraqi parliament expressed their condemnation of the attack through a formal statement, urging both the Iraqi federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to fulfill their responsibilities by not remaining passive in the face of this crime. They called for a thorough investigation to be conducted and appropriate actions to be taken to prevent any future occurrences.
