Karwan Gaznay, spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), affirmed that improving the lives of citizens in the Kurdistan Region remains the foremost priority of the PUK and its President Bafel Jalal Talabani.

Speaking at a press conference, Gaznay stressed that all party cadres will be included in the forthcoming changes, assuring that no one will lose their livelihood. He added that relatives of martyrs, disabled Peshmerga, Anfal victims, youth, and qualified degree holders will play a central role in the upcoming reforms.

Gaznay stated that, as previously announced, the PUK will begin implementing internal changes following the parliamentary elections, based on principles of accountability and reward. The objective, he explained, is to adapt to evolving political, social, economic, and security conditions.

“This is necessary for the party’s work, and change has always been part of the PUK’s approach,” he said.

He further noted that renewal has consistently been a priority for the PUK, adding that the current reforms also aim to restructure party institutions. Under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani, the party has taken significant steps toward renewal and strengthening diplomatic relations in the interest of the people.

Gaznay explained that the changes will include merging several PUK bureaus and establishing new bodies, including a Bureau of Organisational Affairs and a number of specialised organisational boards.

He emphasised that the proud families of martyrs, disabled Peshmerga, and Anfal victims will remain a priority in the party’s future direction.

“The PUK will serve as a platform to empower youth,” he said, adding that reforms will combine youthful energy with revolutionary experience, while also promoting qualified individuals with a renewed spirit of work.

“It is being said that these measures are intended to cut off or exclude some cadres. As the PUK, we assure all our organs, members and supporters that the changes will be comprehensive and there will be a place for everyone,” he said, stressing that the party remains committed to its entire structure.

“The PUK is the big house, and no one is above it,” he added.

Regarding the recent meeting between Mr. Massoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). and President Bafel, Gaznay described the talks as positive, although no agreement was reached.

The discussions, he explained, focused on the current security, economic and political situation in the Kurdistan Region and ways to address key national issues. He emphasised that protecting the Kurdistan Region remains the most important priority, and that both sides agree the people of the Kurdistan Region deserve a better life.

Gaznay noted that these important matters were also discussed during the meeting of the PUK Leadership Council on Saturday.

He further stated that the difficult living conditions faced by citizens have prompted the party to intensify efforts to reach concrete agreements that will genuinely serve the people of Kurdistan.

“As the PUK, we deeply respect the national spirit that has emerged and have fully supported it,” he said.
