On Sulaymaniyah’s 241st Anniversary, PUK Praises the City’s Enduring Role in Kurdish Struggle

The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has issued a statement marking the 241st anniversary of the founding of Sulaymaniyah, which falls on Friday, 14 November 2025.

In its message, the Political Bureau said: “On the occasion of the 241st anniversary of the founding of Sulaymaniyah – the capital of the Baban Emirate, the seat of the first Kurdish government under King Mahmud, and a hub of culture and struggle – we extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the people and residents of Sulaymaniyah.”

The statement continued: “Sulaymaniyah has always been at the forefront of the Kurdish revolutionary and liberation movement, standing firm against oppression, particularly during the formative years of the PUK’s political struggle and the new revolution. The bond between Sulaymaniyah and the PUK has remained inseparable through every stage, sealed by the sacrifices of thousands of the city’s sons and daughters, whether on the gallows or on the front lines.”

It concluded: “On this occasion, we reaffirm our determination to continue advancing the development and prosperity of Sulaymaniyah, in a manner worthy of its sacrifices and achievements. Despite its relatively short history as a city, Sulaymaniyah has consistently demonstrated its spirit of leadership and sovereignty through the pioneering accomplishments it has achieved across all fields of civilisation.”
