The election of Bafel Jalal Talabani as President of the Social Democratic Alliance in the Arab World is not merely a title conferred on a Kurdish figure at a conference and ceremony; it is a historic moment for Kurdish political representation and the values for which it has long struggled. The presence of a leader like Bafel Jalal Talabani in the Alliance carries great significance for the region and the Middle East.
It is now both legitimate and important to ask why this presidential responsibility matters. The answer is clear and can be expressed as follows:
Authoritarianism has often dominated politics in the region, yet the presence of Bafel Talabani as a democratic leader—and the son of a great leader like Mam Jalal—stands out. Therefore, the election of this progressive Kurdish leader, diplomat, and visionary to head an Arab alliance is highly significant. At the same time, President Bafel’s new role continues the path of his father, President Mam Jalal, who represented the Kurds and their political movement for more than half a century.
President Mam Jalal, as the first Kurdish President of Iraq and leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), always sought to promote dialogue, democracy, and coexistence, bringing the Kurdish struggle from the confined borders of Kurdistan to the capital and international platforms.
History testifies that the name of President Mam Jalal has always been inseparable from the ideals of dialogue and non-violence. He believed that progress and stability in Iraq and the region could only be achieved through dialogue, respect for all communities, and coexistence. Bafel Jalal Talabani continues to follow the same policy as his father and carries forward his path. The journey undertaken by President Bafel is not easy, and it remains uncertain whether the next generation of Kurdish leadership can realise these ideals and overcome the challenges. However, I am confident that the PUK President will succeed in this crucial stage.
The Arab world is currently facing numerous challenges, from armed conflicts and the proliferation of militias to deepening inequality and political and economic crises. These, along with countless other problems, have long plagued the region, making the need for unified leadership and a single voice more urgent than ever. In this context, the presence of the Alliance in the region is both important and promising, providing a platform where the region’s complex issues can be openly discussed and addressed through dialogue.
Although the voice of the Social Democrats may not always be the loudest in these conflicts, it is necessary and carries a shared message: the peoples of the region aspire to equality, justice, and good governance. The election of President Bafel demonstrates that the Kurdish leadership, particularly the PUK, has long fought for these values, and no one can champion them more effectively than he can. Moreover, the election of our Kurdish leader to such an alliance in the Arab world sends a powerful message: Arab countries now see the Kurds as partners and allies, and the era of treating the Kurds as outsiders is over. This is a remarkable achievement, and it is truly praiseworthy that President Bafel and the PUK have achieved this significant milestone for the Kurds and Kurdistan.
On the other hand, the PUK has consistently strived to uphold democratic ideals, a commitment that has always set it apart from other Kurdish political parties. Like any other party, the PUK has faced its share of conflicts, domestic and international pressures, and governance challenges. Through this new role, President Bafel can strengthen the PUK’s position both internally and internationally, demonstrating that social democracy is not merely a slogan or ideal, but a genuine path towards political reform.
I am certain that this path will not be easy and will be full of obstacles for President Bafel, given the numerous conflicts and challenges in the region. However, as he himself emphasised during his election speech, this alliance must not be a talking shop, but a platform for collaboration, a single voice, and meaningful politics.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasise that the election of President Bafel is both an honour and a significant responsibility.
This new stage provides him with an opportunity to present his vision on the shared challenges facing Kurds and Arabs, such as poverty, inequality, hopelessness, etc. It also allows him to make this phase a turning point for putting ideals into practice and for bringing diverse perspectives together in a collective front.
The region needs leadership that inspires hope, confidence, and unity among its people. I am confident that President Bafel can prove this is not merely a title, but a new chapter for social democracy in the Arab world.
