The Kurdish Uprising of 1991.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 5, marks the anniversary of the 1991 uprising in Kurdistan, when the people rose up against the dictatorship and tyranny of the dissolved Ba'ath Party regime.
The people of Kurdistan are commemorating this historic event, one of the heroic episodes that was witnessed by both enemies and allies. It was a struggle written in the blood of righteous martyrs and sealed with the sacrifices and bravery of the Peshmerga, all in pursuit of the ultimate goal: the defeat of the dictatorial regime’s forces and the liberation of the Kurdistan Region from oppression.
The PUK: Architect of the Uprising
Wasta Rasul, a member of the Leadership Council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), told PUKMEDIA: "The 1991 uprising was a crucial turning point in the Kurdish revolutionary movement and was the first revolution to achieve its objectives—namely, the liberation of Kurdistan."
He added: "The PUK was the mastermind and implementer of the uprising, creating the uprising programme and spreading it across all cities in the Kurdistan Region, ultimately securing victory and liberating the city of Kirkuk."
Mam Jalal: Establishing a Democratic Legacy
Wasta Rasul also remarked: "The PUK is the party that guided the revolution through this critical historical moment, leading to the results of national liberation. This is a significant achievement for the PUK."
He continued: "The late President Mam Jalal is the one who laid the foundations for the democratic experience post-uprising. His vision for governance in Kurdistan led to the establishment of both the government and the Kurdistan Parliament, helping the Kurdistan Region reach its current stage and securing the gains made for the people of Kurdistan, as established in the Constitution."
Building and Protecting Democracy
Luqman Wardi, a member of the PUK's Leadership Council, told PUKMEDIA: "Following the mountain struggle and the uprising of the people of Kurdistan, the PUK was the one to establish the democratic experience in the Kurdistan Region."
He added: "The PUK not only prepared for and led the uprising, but also remains the party that continues to work with the same spirit to build constitutional and legal institutions in the Kurdistan Region."
Ensuring Freedoms
Luqman Wardi further explained: "After the uprising, the PUK continued to fight with the same spirit, pursuing civil rights and ensuring the freedoms of the people of Kurdistan. The PUK has confronted discrimination and injustice while striving to provide freedom of expression and justice. Today, the party is working to correct the course of governance and improve the living conditions of citizens."
He concluded: "The PUK is committed to resolving the deteriorating conditions that citizens face, addressing the financial crisis, and ending discrimination between cities in the Kurdistan Region and promises to continue its efforts with the same spirit of the uprising, striving to provide a better life for the people and end the crises that have long affected the people of Kurdistan."
