The national Population and Housing Census of Iraq, conducted in three phases, was concluded on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
Mahmoud Othman, Executive Director of the Population and Housing Census in the Kurdistan Region, confirmed PUKMEDIA that the operations of the census teams in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were conducted well, with commendable collaboration between citizens and the teams.
"The tasks were 100% completed, and we successfully counted all citizens and recorded their information in the central system optimally," he stated.
The Ministry of Planning of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) also declared in a statement that the population census concluded on Saturday, having been executed optimally.
The statement indicated that, despite certain financial and technical impediments and insufficient time, they successfully completed all tasks.
It also expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the census process.
The national Population and Housing Census, which took place across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in three different stages, commenced on the morning of Wednesday, November 15, 2024, and concluded on December 14, 2024.
The 2024 census was the first of its kind in Iraq since 1987
Article 11 of the Statistics and Geographic Information Systems Law of 2023 stipulates that a national census of population and housing shall be conducted every 10 years. The first census of the Iraqi population was conducted in 1920 by the British administration of Iraq, followed by the 1927 census, the results of which were cancelled due to the many errors that accompanied the process, then the 1934 census, which was conducted for the purpose of elections, then the 1947 census, which was very successful, prompting the government of the Kingdom of Iraq to pass a law stipulating a population census every 10 years.
The 1957 census was the last census in the royal era, and the 1965 census was the first in the republican era, then the 1977 and 1987 censuses were conducted, and the last in 1997, but the 1997 census did not include the Kurdistan Region.
The current census was of great importance as it was a major development process that contributed to updating poverty line data and indicators in Iraq.
