Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani took part in the unveiling ceremony of the statues of Omar Sheikhmous, one of the founders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and his late wife, Agnita (Sister Tara) in Sulaymaniyah.

Following the ceremony, Talabani shared photographs from the event and reflected on the life and struggle of Omar Sheikhmous and Agnita, describing their story as one shaped by both love and dedication to the freedom of the Kurdish people.

“When love and the struggle for the freedom of the Kurdish people come together, a new story is born — the story of the lives of Omar Sheikhmous and Agnita (Sister Tara),” he wrote.

Talabani said Omar Sheikhmous left the city of Amuda in West Kurdistan [Rojava] carrying “a heart full of love for Kurdistan and a Kurdish consciousness”, crossing what he described as artificial borders to join the struggle in South Kurdistan and become part of the founding leadership of the PUK.

He added that Agnita crossed national boundaries driven by her love for her husband and by humanitarian and freedom-loving values, eventually finding herself among Kurdish fighters in the mountains of Kurdistan.

“Today, with great honour, we unveiled the statue of these two comrades. We will always remain proud of them,” Talabani said.

He also wished good health and a long life to Omar Sheikhmous, whom he described as a veteran leader and a longstanding friend of President Mam Jalal.
