U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly told his aides that he wants to bring the ongoing conflict with Iran to a swift conclusion. According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump expressed concern over the potential escalation of hostilities and emphasised the need to avoid a prolonged war.

The newspaper cited a U.S. official who said that while some of Trump’s close associates advocate for a tougher stance or regime change in Tehran, the president is cautious about the risks of further escalation, particularly the possibility of increased U.S. casualties.

Trump is said to be exploring diplomatic measures alongside ongoing military operations, with the aim of concluding the conflict within weeks. Reports also suggest that discussions have included securing U.S. access to Iranian oil as part of a potential agreement, although details remain unconfirmed.

Despite speculation, Iranian officials have denied direct negotiations with Washington. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told state media that Tehran has not engaged in formal talks and does not intend to hold negotiations with the United States. He clarified that any communication through intermediaries should not be considered official negotiations.

The Wall Street Journal report underscores the delicate balance facing the U.S. administration as it weighs military action against diplomatic options. White House officials have declined to confirm the specifics of Trump’s statements but emphasised that discussions aimed at ending hostilities are ongoing.
