A member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi parliament has gathered significant support to activate a constitutional provision ensuring the use of the Kurdish language in official Iraqi laws, decisions, and publications.

Pola Sirwan Derashay, a PUK MP, announced that he has successfully collected around 100 signatures from lawmakers across various parliamentary factions to push for the implementation of Article 4 of the permanent Iraqi Constitution. The article guarantees the use of Kurdish alongside Arabic in official state matters, including written laws and government decisions.

Derashay noted that the initiative comes on the eve of key Kurdish cultural occasions, including the Kurdish New Year and celebrations of Kurdish dress and mother tongue, adding symbolic importance to the effort.

He expressed his gratitude to the PUK bloc, as well as Kurdish and other political factions in parliament, for their unity and cooperation in advancing the initiative.

The move marks a significant step towards strengthening linguistic rights and ensuring broader representation of Kurdish language in Iraq’s official institutions.
