OpenAI will begin working with the Department of Defense to provide AI services for classified documents, CEO Sam Altman announced on Friday night.

“Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War [Rebrand made by the Trump administration to the Department of Defence] to deploy our models in their classified network,” Altman said in a statement on X.

“In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome,” he added.

“AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission,” he said. “Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems.  The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.”

Altman noted that they would also implement technical safeguards to ensure the models operate as intended, in line with the Department of War’s requirements. He added that Field Deployment Engineers (FDEs) would be assigned to support the models and ensure their safety, and that deployment would take place exclusively on cloud networks.

According to a report by Axios, no new contract has been signed yet between the Pentagon and OpenAI for this agreement, which would allow ChatGPT to be used safely while working in classified settings.
