U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he is working with Jeff Landry, Governor of Louisiana, to send a hospital ship to Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark which President Trump has previously said he would like the United States to acquire.

President Trump announced the plan on social media shortly before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House, where he was seated alongside Governor Landry and held discussions with him.

"Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It’s on the way!!!" President Trump said.

Danish King Frederik paid a second visit to Greenland in a year last week, an attempt to demonstrate unity with the territory in the face of President Trump's push to buy the island.

Greenland, Denmark and the United States held talks late last month aimed at easing tensions that have persisted for months within the NATO defence alliance.

President Trump’s post came hours after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command announced it had evacuated a crew member in need of urgent medical treatment from a U.S. submarine operating in Greenlandic waters, approximately seven nautical miles from the capital, Nuuk.

The U.S. Navy operates two hospital ships — the USNS Mercy and the USNS Comfort — although neither vessel is based in Louisiana.
