The Iraqi parliament reconvened on Tuesday evening, 30 December 2025, to elect the Second Deputy Speaker, after two rounds of voting held the previous day failed to produce a result.

Speaking to PUKMEDIA, Dr Bryar Rashid, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) parliamentary bloc, said that Article 7 of the parliament’s internal regulations had been amended, allowing nominations for the post of Second Deputy Speaker to be reopened. He noted that a third round of voting subsequently commenced.

Dr Rashid explained that Shakhawan Abdullah had withdrawn from the race, with Farhad Atroushi nominated as his replacement. Atroushi is now contesting the position alongside Dr Rebwar Karim.

The Iraqi parliament held its first session of the sixth parliamentary term on Monday, chaired by the oldest member of parliament, Amer al-Fayez, with 309 MPs in attendance. During the session, Haibat al-Halbousi was elected Speaker, while Adnan Fayhan secured the post of First Deputy Speaker.

However, neither Rebwar Karim nor Shakhwan Abdullah managed to secure an absolute majority in the two initial rounds of voting for the Second Deputy Speaker. As a result, the session was adjourned for consultations and later resumed on Tuesday.
