Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid reaffirmed that “strengthening the democratic process is a national duty that requires adherence to constitutional timelines,” calling for unified efforts to move forward with the formation of a government that represents all Iraqis.

President Rashid participated in a memorial ceremony marking the 23rd anniversary of the martyrdom of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim and commemorating Iraqi Martyrs’ Day. The ceremony was held in Baghdad under the auspices of the office of Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim.

During his speech at the ceremony, President Rashid highlighted that “the Iraqi people have successfully held parliamentary elections, demonstrating their commitment to democratic principles,” adding that “important milestones now lie ahead in completing the formation of the legislative and executive authorities.”

He also emphasised that “strengthening the democratic process is a national duty that requires adherence to constitutional timelines,” calling for unified efforts to move forward with the formation of a government that represents all Iraqis.

The sixth term of the Iraqi parliamentary elections were held on 11 November 2025. Following the vote, the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced the final results of the elections.

Iraq's Federal Supreme Court ratified the final results of the elections on 14 December 2025, while the Iraqi President signed a Republican Decree calling on the newly elected parliament on Monday, 29 December 2025.

In his remarks, the President also paid tribute to the Iraqi martyrs and said: “We commemorate Iraqi Martyrs’ Day to honour the immense sacrifices made by our noble people, including members of our security forces in all their formations — the army, police, Popular Mobilisation Forces, and Peshmerga.”

He added: “We also solemnly recall the anniversary of the martyrdom of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim, a prominent religious and national figure who devoted his life to resisting dictatorship.”

President Rashid stressed that “our national, moral, and educational responsibility requires us to continuously honour the sacrifices of martyrs, scholars, and distinguished national figures, and to pass their heroic legacy on to future generations.”

He affirmed that “the martyrs did not sacrifice their lives for the present alone, but for a future built on freedom, dignity, and justice.” He noted that “Iraq has overcome extremely difficult periods marked by tyranny, violence, and terrorism, and has today reached a stage of security and stability that must be preserved through collective effort.”
