Iraqi President Sets Date for New Parliament's First Session

Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid has signed a Republican Decree calling on the newly elected parliament on Monday, 29 December 2025.

In accordance with the provisions of the Iraqi Constitution, the presidential decree formally sets the date for the first session of the new parliament following the ratification of the final election results by the Federal Supreme Court.

The inaugural session will be chaired by the oldest member of parliament and will include the election of the Speaker of the parliament and the two Deputy Speakers, marking the start of the new parliamentary term.

The sixth term of the Iraqi parliamentary elections were held on 11 November 2025. Following the vote, the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced the final results of the elections, according to which, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) secured 18 seats.
