Amid growing anticipation, political forces are working to lay the groundwork for a consensus government following parliamentary elections marked by intense competition among candidate lists. The Coordination Framework, holding substantial parliamentary influence, is spearheading a broad initiative to realign internal alliances, taking into account the rights and entitlements of the process’s partners, in a bid to overcome traditional divisions and establish a model for national consensus.

Speaking to Al-Sabah newspaper, Ahmed Al-Maamouri, official spokesperson for the Iraqi Foundation Coalition, said that the Framework’s committee responsible for interviewing prime ministerial candidates has so far reviewed the files of nine individuals, concentrating on their policies regarding security, the economy, and international relations.

Al-Maamouri added that the prime minister will be selected as a consensus candidate representing the Framework in its entirety, independent of electoral strength, while that strength will be considered in the allocation of ministries to ensure equitable representation. He emphasised that the next government will be consensus-based, inclusive of all segments of Iraqi society, and committed to adhering to constitutional deadlines.

Political alliances face internal pressures, as some parties favour extending the current term, while others are pushing alternative nominations, delaying the emergence of a unified stance.

Political analyst Abbas al-Jubouri noted that alliances outside the formal Coordination Framework are seeking an active negotiating role, while the question of the three presidencies remains a major obstacle. He stressed the importance of securing agreement among political forces on all contentious issues, particularly ministerial portfolios and financial and oil agreements.

Meanwhile, analyst Mahmoud Al-Husseini asserted that the Coordination Framework is currently more cohesive than in any previous session, prioritising national interests above all else. He added that the current political manoeuvres offer an opportunity to redefine governance, ensuring state stability and laying a solid foundation for a consensus government that meets the aspirations of Iraqis and restores confidence in their institutions.
