The US House of Representatives.
The Iraqi Embassy in Washington has hailed the decision of the United States House of Representatives to repeal the 1991 and 2002 Iraq War Authorisations, describing the move as a historic step towards strengthening bilateral relations.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the embassy said the repeal represents “a strengthening of the principle of sovereignty” and “opens a new chapter in Iraqi–American relations based on mutual respect and common interests.” The embassy added that it looked forward to the measure passing through the US Senate in the near future.
Baghdad welcomed the development as an important milestone in reshaping Iraq’s international standing. The embassy emphasised that the decision not only bolsters Iraq’s image as a responsible partner but also demonstrates its ongoing commitment to working with the United States to promote regional stability and international cooperation.
“The repeal sends a clear message to the international community that Iraq today is a partner in peace and an active voice in issues of development and shared prosperity,” the statement continued. The embassy also highlighted that the move reflects a “distinct political and legislative approach in Washington” and offers fresh opportunities to enhance cooperation in fields such as the economy, education, energy, and culture.
Iraq now awaits final approval of the measure in the US Senate, a step the embassy believes will consolidate relations and open the way for broader strategic collaboration between the two nations.
