Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council: Over 33,000 Released Under Amended Amnesty Law

Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council
The Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq has released updated statistics on the implementation of the amendment to General Amnesty Law No. 27 of 2016.
In a statement issued by the Council’s media office on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, and received by PUKMEDIA, it was confirmed that a total of 33,536 individuals have been released from prisons and detention centres under the law. Meanwhile, the overall number of those covered by the legislation — including defendants with arrest or summons warrants, individuals released on bail, and those convicted in absentia — has reached 136,817.
The statement added that funds recovered through the enforcement of the amended law amounted to 37,144,340,499 Iraqi dinars, equivalent to approximately 34,347,254.44 US dollars.
On 21 January 2025, the Iraqi parliament approved the second amendment to General Amnesty Law No. 27 of 2016. The law was ratified by the President of the Republic of Iraq on 13 February 2025 and entered into force on 17 February 2025 following its publication in the Iraqi Gazette.
