Iraq’s Ministry of Transport announced the resumption of Iraqi Airways flights from Basra International Airport during daylight hours only. The Ministry confirmed that Iraqi airspace remains temporarily closed, except for daytime flights operating through Basra, while a lawmaker of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) reaffirmed that they continue their efforts to return stranded citizens home safely.

Dr Briar Rashid, a PUK lawmaker in the Iraqi Parliament, told PUKMEDIA that intensive efforts are under way to repatriate citizens from the Kurdistan Region who are stranded in Lebanon, Jordan and Qatar as a result of the recent escalation of the security situation in the region.

Dr Rashid said he had spoken by telephone with the Iraqi Minister of Transport Razzaq Muhaibis urging him to take measures to find swift and effective solutions for the return of these citizens. He noted that the Minister had pledged to take “serious and rapid action” to facilitate their repatriation via airports in the relevant countries.

According to Dr Rashid, current security conditions require citizens to return via Basra International Airport. He added that coordination is ongoing with the Ministries of Transport and Foreign Affairs to ensure their safe return.

Dr Rashid called on citizens stranded in Lebanon, Jordan and Qatar to contact his office via WhatsApp and to provide them with their personal details so that they, in turn, give them to Iraqi consulates and embassies in those countries, to enable the necessary arrangements for their return.

The office of Dr Briar Rashid has provided the following WhatsApp number for communication: +964 770 207 1414.
