The Director of the Kurdistan Region’s General Directorate for Mine Action has confirmed that 14 individuals have fallen victim to landmine and unexploded ordnance incidents in the Region so far this year. He also noted that 200 square kilometres of land remain uncleared of mines and other explosive remnants.

Speaking to Kurdistani Nwe newspaper, Jabbar Mustafa, the Director of the General Directorate for Mine Action, stated: “This year, 14 civilians have been affected by mines and unexploded ordnance — eight of whom have lost their lives, while six others sustained injuries. Six of the victims were from Sulaymaniyah Governorate, seven from Erbil Governorate, and one from the Garmian Administration.”

He added that in 2024, the total number of mine victims was eight.

“During the springtime, incidents of mine and explosive-related injuries tend to rise, as many citizens head outdoors to gather seasonal herbs and plants. Unfortunately, some ignore warning signs and safety guidelines, entering hazardous areas,” Mustafa explained.

He further pointed out that, historically, 776 square kilometres of land in the Kurdistan Region have been contaminated with mines and explosives. Of this, 576 square kilometres have been cleared so far, leaving 200 square kilometres still in need of clearance.

“Our demining teams continue operations from Zakho to Garmian,” he said, “but limited resources and the Region’s financial difficulties hinder the pace of clearance. Priority is given to areas near residential zones and popular tourist destinations.”

Mustafa also highlighted that over the years, the organisation has lost 36 personnel and seen 78 others disabled in the line of duty. He stressed that mines and explosive devices do not become inert with time, urging the public to remain vigilant, steer clear of minefields, and avoid handling any remnants of war to prevent further tragedies.
