PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), issued a statement expressing his concern over the tensions in Kirkuk.
President Bafel's statement said:
We are profoundly troubled by the unwelcome events in Kirkuk, which have resulted in the death of a Kurdish youth and the injury of numerous others.
We condemn vehemently any efforts to harm brotherhood and coexistence in Kirkuk. As quickly as possible, those responsible for killing and injuring our sons must be apprehended and brought to justice.
You, the proud people of Kirkuk, deserve unbounded respect and meaningful service, not to be used to solve political problems or sacrificed for personal benefit. We strongly oppose this evil and unjust policy and will not tolerate the shedding of our youth's blood or the gambling with their destinies and lives in the name of patriotism.
I call on all parties involved, particularly the Iraqi government, to prevent further carnage and bring an immediate end to this situation. In addition, we warn that the situation in Kirkuk must be normalized as quickly as possible. Therefore, we urge everyone to manage the situation with the utmost responsibility and to avoid sowing discord and sedition. To end this situation and preserve harmony and brotherhood between all ethnic groups and communities in Kirkuk, everyone must work together.
May the martyr Hawkar's soul rest in peace, and my condolences to his honorable family. I pray God to bestow everyone with forbearance and to heal the injured.
