New rocket attack targets Turkish Military Base in Bashiqa

At least two rockets targeted a Turkish military base in Nineveh's Bashiqa, an official of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said Sunday.

Ghayath Surchi, head of the media office of the PUK's Nineveh Organizations Center, told PUKmedia that two rockets targeted the Zilkan Military Base in Bashiqa, explaining that the two rockets landed near a force of the 70 units of the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces, without causing any casualties.

Surchi pointed out that the rocket was launched from areas in the Nineveh Plain, noting that the bombing is not the first of its kind on the Turkish base... Five Turkish soldiers were killed last month in another rocket attack."

The base has been targeted at least seven times since the beginning of the year. Eighteen rockets were fired at the base in February.

Turkey-Iraq relations deteriorated after the deployment of around 150 Turkish soldiers to Iraq in December 2015. Turkish troops were deployed under the pretext of training Iraqi and Kurdish forces in their fight against the Islamic State (ISIS).

The troops are still present in the area despite calls from Iraqi officials to leave.
