Iraq's Ministry of Health announced that Iraq entered a new wave of covid pandemic on Monday, stressing the need to expedite the vaccinations against the virus.

The ministry said in a statement that monitoring shows a noticeable increase in the percentage of positive cases from total covid tests conducted during the past days, as well as an increase in the number of hospitalized cases, which means that Iraq entered a new wave of the pandemic and this is what the Ministry, the World Health Organization and international scientific institutions have constantly warned of the possibility of new epidemic waves or the emergence of new existing and expected mutant.

It also added that the increase in infections is due to the lack of vaccinations and noncompliance with health measures such as wearing masks and social distancing, as well as frequent hand washing.

The statement stressed the need to expedite the vaccinations, especially for high-risk groups, as well as the commitment to health and preventive measures.

Covid infections have recently soared in Iraq with daily cases reaching over 500. The country has so far registered 2,332,692 covid cases with the number of deaths from the virus reaching 25,229 cases.
