Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with Congressman Brad Schneider, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives (Democrats) in Washington, DC.
In the meeting, which was attended by Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, Head of the Relations Bureau, they discussed the latest developments in the region and emphasised the continuity of international efforts in order to maintain peace and security in the region.
Bafel Jalal Talabani explained the PUK's position on the situation in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq and said that the continuation of responsible dialogue between the political parties in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq is the main factor in achieving stability and leading the country towards prosperity. And for this to be achieved, he further added that everyone must prioritize national interests and all efforts must be aimed towards the service of the people.
The issue of terrorism and continuation of assistance to the Peshmerga forces was another topic of the meeting. President Bafel stated that PUK stresses the reform process and the process of unification of the Peshmerga forces within a national force. Expanding military coordination between the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the international coalition will lead to greater stability in the region and will lessen the threat of terrorism on people's lives.
In addition to stressing the need for the protection of constitutional rights of the Kurdish people in Iraq, Bafel Jalal Talabani also added that election is the best option for change in the governance process and moving towards a democratic and more prosperous region, and hence we emphasize the necessity of holding elections on schedule.
