The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) filed an appeal on Wednesday against the decision made by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) to suspend the financial and technical preparations for the upcoming Kurdistan Parliament elections, which are scheduled for June 10, 2024.
The Head of the Elections Bureau and Legal Affairs Center of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) considered the suspension of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections by the commissioners as unlawful, asserting that the decision was driven by political motives rather than legal grounds.
Rizgar Hama: The decision of the Council of Commissioners is illegal
Rzgar Haji Hama, the Head of the Elections Bureau of the PUK, stated to PUKMEDIA: "We are appealing the judgment made by the Commissioners' Board since the decision does not align with the principles of democracy in the Kurdistan Region."
Rizgar Haji Hama states that it is not allowed to file an appeal against the IHEC's procedures until 6 months prior, and there are only a few days remaining until the beginning of the political campaign.
He stated that the objective of this complaint is to delay the elections, thus we lodged an appeal against the commissioners' decision.
Talar Latif: The decision affects Kurdistan Region's democratic progress
Talar Latif, Head of the Legal Affairs Center of the PUK told PUKMEDIA: "The Head of the Elections Bureau lodged an appeal against the decision of the IHEC to halt the technical procedures associated with the Kurdistan Parliament elections."
"This decision will adversely impact the Kurdistan Region and undermine its democratic progress, leading to negative consequences for the Region. The state order issued by the Federal Court did not explicitly address the suspension of procedures, but instead focused only on the allocation of seats as outlined in Article 2, she added, "However, the IHEC made an excessively drastic step by halting the processes for the Kurdistan Parliament elections. It was possible to proceed with the remaining procedures."
