The Digital Media Center (DMC) expressed its astonishment at the accounts of some politicians and institutions who closed the commenting feature for users on posts on their accounts and pages on the Twitter and Facebook platforms.

"We are surprised that the accounts of some politicians and institutions have closed the commenting feature for users on posts in their accounts and pages on the Twitter and Facebook platforms," the center said in a statement on Sunday.

The statement explained that "social networking sites are based on the foundations of communication and the principles of dialogue that are embodied through comments and interaction on publications, and the public accounts of Iraqi politicians are a general right of the public. Therefore depriving people of commenting or expressing opinions is a violation of the principles of democracy."

"The real digital culture stands against the approach of closing the comment feature on their accounts," the statement said, noting that "closing this feature establishes a new dictatorship which is accepting one opinion and does not listen to the other, and deprives the owner of the publication of seeing important opinions."

It also stressed that "many of the comments carry deep opinions and have connotations or specific appeals, and therefore canceling this feature means that one opinion will take effect and not accepting the idea of seeing a different opinion."
