Iraq's Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi inaugurated the Iraq Museum on Sunday after finishing reconstruction and maintenance works.

The inauguration ceremony coincided with the National Day of Tolerance and Coexistence and the first anniversary of the historic visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Iraq and his meeting with Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani.

Kadhimi also inaugurated the ceremony for exhibiting Iraqi antiquities recovered from five countries: the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Italy, and Lebanon.

The Prime Minister commended the efforts made by the Ministry of Culture and the rest of the authorities to preserve Iraq's antiquities and heritage.

He also urged to continue recovering Iraqi antiquities through diplomatic coordination with countries, stressing Iraq's right to recover all Iraqi antiquities that were smuggled or stolen before and after 2003, and stressed the government's unlimited support for all recovery procedures.

The Iraq Museum is the national museum of Iraq, located in Baghdad. The Iraq Museum contains precious relics from the Mesopotamian, Persian, and Islamic civilizations.

It was looted during and after the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. After being closed for many years while being refurbished, and rarely open for public viewing, the museum was officially reopened in February 2015.
