A passport directorate is set to open in Khanaqin after the Iraqi Minister of Interior and the Directorate General of Nationality and Passports approved a request submitted by a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi parliament.

Speaking to PUKMEDIA, Srwa Mohammed, a member of the PUK parliamentary bloc, said the move followed repeated requests from residents of Khanaqin for a local passport office.

"We received numerous requests from the people of Khanaqin to establish a passport directorate in the district. In response, I formally submitted a request to the Iraqi Directorate General of Nationality and Passports to support the establishment of the office," she said.

Srwa Mohammed added that, following sustained efforts, approval had been secured from both the Minister of Interior and the Directorate General of Nationality and Passports.

"The building is ready, and work is under way to connect it to Baghdad's passport system. We expect the directorate to begin operating in the near future," she said.

She noted that the new office would spare residents of Khanaqin and neighbouring areas from having to travel to Diyala to complete passport procedures.

"This is another commitment we have fulfilled in service of the people of Khanaqin," she added.
