Today, 22 January 2026, marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Kurdistan Republic in Mahabad, a landmark moment in Kurdish history.

The Mahabad Republic was founded in January 1946 in East Kurdistan (present-day Iran) and was led by Qazi Muhammad, who served as its president for nearly a year. Despite its brief existence, the republic became a symbol of Kurdish aspirations for self-determination and national unity.

During its short lifespan, the Mahabad Republic established Kurdish-language institutions, schools, and local governance structures, fostering a sense of national identity among Kurds and inspiring generations of Kurdish leaders and activists.

After the republic’s fall in December 1946, Qazi Muhammad was executed by the Iranian government, cementing his place in Kurdish history as a martyr for Kurdish statehood. His life and leadership continue to inspire Kurds across the region and the diaspora.

Kurds commemorate the anniversary as a reminder of the enduring struggle for Kurdish rights and autonomy, honouring the legacy of Qazi Muhammad and the Mahabad Republic as symbols of resilience and national pride.
