Qubad Talabani spoke during a press conference.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, has confirmed that the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) will field a candidate for the presidency.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of the International Investment Conference in Sulaymaniyah, as covered by PUKMEDIA, he said recent meetings in Baghdad had been positive and offered a valuable opportunity to understand political perspectives there. He added that the discussions allowed the PUK to present its own vision to Iraqi parties, noting that a strong Iraq reinforces the strength of the Kurdistan Region and that the party intends to contribute to shaping a clear strategy to resolve outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad.
Talabani stated that talks are ongoing, with another round scheduled for next week, adding that dialogue has progressed well ahead of the elections. On public sector wages, he assured that November and December salaries for employees in the Kurdistan Region would not be lost, stressing that efforts are being made to safeguard this entitlement and ensure payments are provided monthly through measures such as regular payroll submissions and continued oil exports. He expressed optimism about the process, saying progress was moving in the right direction.
On the presidency, Talabani said:
“We in the PUK have not yet nominated a specific individual for the Presidency of the Republic, but we will certainly put forward a candidate.”
