Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Monday directed security forces to confront any action that threatens Iraq’s security and stability.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Media Office and received by PUKMEDIA, al-Sudani chaired an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council to review the overall situation in the country amid recent developments and escalating regional tensions.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed his instructions to security forces to counter any attempt to destabilise the country and to prevent any party from carrying out operations that could draw Iraq into ongoing conflicts.

The Council stressed that while the State guarantees freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly in accordance with the Constitution and national laws, the government will not allow attacks on diplomatic missions or vital facilities, noting that security forces will continue to protect citizens, diplomatic missions, and both public and private property, while upholding Iraq’s international obligations.

The Council further affirmed Iraq’s commitment to preventing escalation and ensuring that its territory is not used for external or internal conflicts. It emphasised that decisions related to national security, peace, and military movements are the exclusive responsibility of the State and its constitutional institutions.

The meeting also addressed potential economic risks stemming from continued and expanding military operations in the region. The Minister of Oil, the Acting Minister of Electricity, and the Minister of Trade presented detailed briefings on fuel supplies, energy production, and food security. The Council discussed necessary measures to mitigate the possible impact of regional developments on Iraq and the global economy.
