Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani on Monday directed the Ministry of Interior to launch an urgent investigation into the assassination of Yanar Mohammed, one of Iraq’s most prominent women’s rights activists and founder of the country’s first shelters for survivors of domestic violence and trafficking.

Qahtan al-Kaabi, the Prime Minister’s Adviser for Civil Society Organisations, stated that al-Sudani had ordered a comprehensive inquiry to uncover the circumstances of the crime, identify those responsible, and ensure they are pursued and brought to justice.

He stressed that the government “will not allow such crimes to go unpunished,” reaffirming its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting civil society activists.

Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul-Amir al-Shammari has ordered the formation of a specialised investigative team earlier in the day to determine the circumstances surrounding the the women’s rights activist.

In a statement, the Interior Ministry said that Minister al-Shammari stressed “the necessity of conducting a thorough and professional investigation, gathering all evidence, and utilising intelligence and technical capabilities to uncover the causes of the incident, identify the perpetrators, and ensure their arrest in accordance with the law.”

The ministry confirmed that the case is being directly monitored by the Minister, adding that security forces have launched field operations and that the public will be informed once investigations are completed.

The Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq announced the assassination of its president, Yanar Mohammed, who was shot in front of her home in the al-Banoq neighbourhood of northern Baghdad. The organisation stated that two armed individuals on motorcycles carried out the attack. She was transported to hospital with serious injuries but later succumbed to her wounds.
