Qubad Talabani, member of the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), led a high-level delegation to Baghdad, where he met with Faiq Zaidan, President of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council.

The meeting, held on Sunday evening, 7 December 2025, focused on the Iraqi parliamentary elections. Both sides agreed that the successful conduct of the elections represents an important democratic achievement for all the people of Iraq. They expressed hope that, in line with the results, a government will be formed that meets the expectations and aspirations of all Iraqi communities.

Talabani affirmed that the PUK believes many of Iraq’s challenges—including outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad—can be resolved by returning to full constitutional implementation. He stressed that adherence to the constitution, and the application of all its articles, is the only viable path towards resolving disputes and advancing Iraq’s stability and development.

During the meeting, the head of the PUK delegation further emphasised that the foremost priority for both the next Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the future Iraqi government must be the resolution of outstanding issues between them. In particular, he stressed that the budget—being a constitutional entitlement of the Kurdish people—should no longer be tangled with political conflicts.
