PUK Pushes for Unity and Service-Oriented Government as Iraq Enters New Political Phase

Iraq’s political landscape has entered a new stage following the announcement of the preliminary results of the parliamentary elections, with winning parties intensifying efforts to build alliances ahead of forming the next government.

In the wake of the results, meetings and negotiations have begun among political leaders as they work to establish the largest parliamentary bloc before the first session of the parliament, which will be convened at the invitation of the President of the Republic after ratification of the results by the Federal Court.

PUK President Meets Judiciary Chief, Calls for National Unity

Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met in Baghdad with Faiq Zaidan, President of the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq. 

Discussions centred on the importance of enhanced coordination among political parties and the need to expedite the formation of a national, service-oriented government capable of meeting the expectations of citizens. Both sides stressed the significance of safeguarding constitutional and legal rights to reinforce stability throughout the country.

President Bafel praised the judiciary’s crucial role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the parliamentary elections and reaffirmed the PUK’s commitment to promoting unity, bridging political differences, and improving public services across Iraq.

PUK President Meets British Consul General, Stresses Kurdish Unity

In a separate meeting in Debashan, President Bafel Jalal Talabani received Andrew Bizley, the British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region. Their discussions focused on the election outcomes and the importance of sustained coordination among Iraq’s political parties to protect national security and stability.

President Bafel highlighted the necessity of Kurdish unity during this critical period, stating: “Our power, and the protection of our rights, rely on harmony and consensus among ourselves in Baghdad.”

Addressing outstanding issues between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region, he stressed that the PUK is committed to resolving these matters in line with the Constitution to ensure citizens are not left bearing the consequences of political disputes. He reaffirmed the party’s determination to support the formation of an inclusive, service-oriented government that delivers equally for all Iraqis.

Iraq’s parliamentary elections were held last week, recording a voter turnout of 55%.
