Commander Akam Omar's biography:
Akam Omar, Commander of the Commando Forces in Kurdistan
- Born in 1986 in Erbil to a patriotic family, he was the son of the distinguished Peshmerga, Omar Othman.
- He completed his primary and secondary education in Erbil.
- Thanks to his proficiency in English, he worked from 2006 to 2010 as a translator and soldier with the American forces.
- In 2011, with support from the Americans, he went on to study at the Military College in the United States.
- He returned to the Kurdistan Region in 2014, where he connected with Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, then commander of the 70th Forces, and joined the Peshmerga forces.
- Commander Akam Omar became a vital link between the Peshmerga forces and the international coalition’s air force, and his efforts led to multiple successful coalition airstrikes on ISIS hideouts near Jalawla.
- In 2015, his responsibilities shifted to the Kirkuk Province. By the decision of Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, he established a new unit, the Commando Force, consisting of 38 Peshmerga.
- This force became a pivotal ally in the Peshmerga’s fight against ISIS, offering significant support thanks to its members’ bravery and training under American, German, and French forces. Over time, the Commando Force expanded from 38 to 3,000 fighters and was restructured into the Kurdistan Commando Forces Command.
- Commander Akam Omar was wounded twice during the liberation of Mosul from ISIS in 2016. One of his heroic acts included killing a suicide bomber charging towards the Peshmerga, which led to an explosion that severely injured him. During the battle against ISIS, he also killed 9 other suicide bombers in similar actions.
- In 2017, when ISIS attacked a US military post in the Kaiwan camp in Kirkuk, Commander Akam Omar led his Commando forces to assist. A suicide bomber targeted his unit, killing one Peshmerga and injuring Akam Omar and five of his men. He was later flown to the United States for medical treatment due to the severity of his injuries.
- On another occasion, when a group of Peshmerga forces were besieged by ISIS in the Fifth Axis, Commander Akam Omar and his Commando team successfully broke the siege, rescuing two fallen and four injured Peshmerga.
- Martyr Akam Omar was the first leader and Peshmerga to achieve the rank of brigadier general at such a young age, due to his exceptional bravery, dedication, and loyalty.
- Outside of his military duties, he was also known for his compassion, providing financial aid and blood donations, and supporting thalassemia patients and Hiwa Hospital for cancer treatment.
May his legacy continue to inspire.
