Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid's meeting with top state leaders.
Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid hosted a senior meeting on Monday, 18 August 2025, at Baghdad Palace with Iraq’s top state leaders, including Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, and President of the Supreme Judicial Council Faiq Zidan. The discussions focused on national developments and preparations for the forthcoming parliamentary elections.
President Rashid presented proposals aimed at ensuring the upcoming parliamentary elections are conducted in a secure and stable environment, grounded in the principles of transparency, integrity, and equal opportunity for all candidates.
Participants reviewed the recent sessions of the parliament and underlined the importance of resolving related matters strictly within constitutional and legal frameworks. They also emphasised the need to accelerate deliberations on draft bills before the parliament, particularly laws designed to safeguard citizens’ rights and strengthen democratic governance.
The meeting further highlighted the role of the Supreme Judicial Council in overseeing the implementation of electoral laws. Leaders affirmed the parliament’s responsibility to uphold the rule of law, reinforce democratic principles, guarantee transparency, and maintain public confidence in state institutions.
Deliberations also addressed the General Amnesty Law, covering the number of inmates eligible under its provisions, the handling of their cases, and the work of committees tasked with reinvestigation, retrial, and release procedures. The leaders agreed on the importance of expediting implementation, removing obstacles, and ensuring the law’s effective and equitable enforcement.
