PUK President: Anfal was Crime to Erase a Nation

On the 36th anniversary of the Anfal massacre, Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), issued a statement emphasising the importance of collective efforts, a strong sense of Kurdish identity, and responsible leadership in guiding our troubled nation toward stability and prosperity.
President Bafel's message read:
Today, we solemnly observe the 36th anniversary of the Anfal campaign and the genocide perpetrated against our people. We honour the spirits of the martyrs and extend our heartfelt gratitude and prayers to their resilient families.
Anfal is an unforgettable crime and a deep wound in the heart of the homeland. It was an intention to destroy and erase a nation that called for freedom and dreamed of prosperity. It is also a historical lesson to understand the fact that no matter how many differences we have, our nationality as Kurds comes first, and our fate and survival depend on our unity.
The Kurdish nation has endured various forms of hardship in the past. We must acknowledge this historical event and refrain from engaging in politics driven by limited parties and personal agendas. We should not compromise our principles and objectives for an unjust and unneeded dispute. Thus, I hope that everyone of us will diligently and conscientiously collaborate with a Kurdish mindset, leading our repressed nation towards security and prosperity, a nation whose sacrifices we are all indebted to.
