The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) issued a statement commemorating the Anfal tragedy and urging the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Federal Government, and the Iraqi Parliament, to boost endeavors in serving the people who have been impacted by this catastrophe.
The Political Bureau's message read:
36 years ago, our people endured a heinous atrocity perpetrated by the oppressive Ba'ath regime, the Anfal crime, which unfolded in eight stages. In addition to the massacre and vanishing of 182,000 Kurdish minors, youths, and senior citizens, it also erased any indications of prosperity in around 5,000 settlements and municipalities in Kurdistan.
The Anfal catastrophe inflicted an indelible and enduring anguish upon our hearts and thoughts. In order to address this grave wound and eliminate the lasting impact of this calamity, it is imperative for all of us in the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Federal Government, and the Iraqi Parliament, to boost our endeavors in serving the people who have been impacted by this catastrophe.
Despite the Iraqi Supreme Criminal Tribunal acknowledging the Anfal case as a war crime and crime against humanity in 2008, the magnitude of the tragedy and its repercussions necessitate its international recognition as a genocide. Additionally, it is imperative to safeguard the future of the Kurdish people by ensuring the protection of all their constitutional rights. The PUK will persist in striving for the aforementioned objectives.
