Kurdistan Parliament Speaker meets UN Secretary-General at the parliament's building
Rewaz Fayaq, the Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament, and Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, stressed the significance of having free elections in the Kurdistan Region and resolving the problems between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad.
Both parties emphasized the necessity of dialogue and an agreement between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad that takes the Iraqi people's interests into account during the meeting as they discussed the internal problems of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
In addition, the two parties agreed that the Kurdistan Region should hold free and fair elections for the Kurdistan Parliament to overcome barriers and defend fundamental principles. They also agreed that international organizations should play a significant role in monitoring the process.
Discussions also included the human rights situation and the expansion of freedoms in the Kurdistan region. In this regard, Guterres stated that the region's human rights situation should not deteriorate, public liberties should not be restrictive, and there must be firm protection of democratic ideals.
In response, Fayaq stated that the Kurdistan Parliament would play a role in this matter, emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights in light of international reports, comments, and recommendations to advance freedom in the region. She also thanked the UN Secretary-General for his concern and remarks about the region's upcoming elections, human rights, and freedom.
