Two weeks ago, Bafel Jalal Talabani, the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), travelled to Washington, D.C.. During his tour, he engaged in several diplomatic and political talks with authorities, members of Congress, and research centres. The Head of the PUK's Relations Bureau affirms that the Americans attentively considered the viewpoints and stances of the PUK and President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
President Bafel explained the PUK's policy to the U.S.
Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, the Head of the PUK's Relations Bureau, emphasised the significance of the visit, stating in a news release that the United States (U.S.) is a crucial ally in the Middle East. He went on to say: "In Iraq, the U.S. has made significant sacrifices to establish the freedom and democracy that we currently enjoy."
"Hence, our arrival to Washington was imperative in order to inform the officials here of the perspectives held by the PUK and President Bafel on diverse matters. They attentively observed these visions," he added.
He also said: "We were warmly welcomed at all levels during our visit, which included three significant meetings at the White House. Additionally, we had several meetings with members of both the Republican and Democratic parties in Congress. We also held meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Department of Defence (the Pentagon), as well as at research centres that influence American policy. They showed a keen interest in listening to our observations and insights."
The U.S. emphasises the importance of holding elections in Kurdistan
Darbaz Kosrat Rasul further said: "The energy sector in the Kurdistan Region holds significant strategic value for the U.S., and they have insights on how to effectively govern this sector in the Kurdistan Region," emphasising that "the Americans emphasised the significance of solidarity and cooperation among the political parties in Kurdistan, and reaffirmed their backing for the Region."
He stated that the U.S. consistently emphasises the importance of conducting Kurdistan Parliament elections promptly. As the PUK, we have expressed our complete preparedness to hold the elections and have urged all parties to do the same. This is because the elections play a crucial role in maintaining and fortifying the Kurdistan Region. Thus, the people of Kurdistan has an inherent and valid democratic entitlement that should not be obstructed."
Darbaz Kosrat Rasoul has affirmed that U.S. officials share the belief that the Kurdistan Region may face significant threats if elections are not held. Furthermore, it has the potential to seriously impact the level of U.S. assistance for the Kurdistan Peshmerga forces.
