Asayish member martyred during duty: Slemani Asayish

Slemani Asayish Directorate announced on Saturday that one of their employees was killed while carrying out a duty to arrest a suspect on charges of drug trafficking.

Slemani Asayish said in a statement that Commissioner Tebin Jamal Aziz was martyred on Saturday morning as the Asayish forces were trying to arrest a suspect named (N.M.H) who had previously had an arrest warrant on charges of drug trafficking.

The directorate also offered condolences to the relatives and friends of the martyr.

Security forces have recently begun a crackdown on drug dealers in an attempt to reduce drug use in the Kurdistan Region., which has noticeably increased in recent years.

Last Sunday, the most dangerous drug dealer in the Kurdistan Region was arrested by security forces, the Soran Center for Narcotics Control announced.

The Kurdistan Region has become a major hub of narcotics given the sharp increase in the demand for drugs. In 2021, 1,943 people were arrested on drug-related charges, according to the Kurdistan Region’s Anti-narcotics Department. 

The Kurdistan Region also lacks rehabilitation centers for drug addicts, as well as resources to raise awareness about the repercussions of drug use. Most drug users end up arrested without being rehabilitated.
