On Friday, Sozan Mansour, MP of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, confirmed the continuation of efforts to recognize the University Of Garmian as an official Iraqi university.

"The General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers (Iraqi) pledged to facilitate the recognition procedures for Garmian University," MP Mansour told PUKmedia.

She also explained that she and MP Karwan Yarwais visited Hamid al-Ghari, the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, who promised to cooperate and facilitate the procedures for recognizing Garmian University as an official university in Iraq.

According to Mansour, the meeting also discussed several other service and administrative issues related to Khanaqin District in particular and Garmian regions in general.

The University Of Garmian was established in the spring of 2010, as a gift from the sixth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to the Garmian region. It has 8 departments and over 273 holders of doctorate and master’s degrees are lecturers at the university.

Although the university is one of the official universities of the Kurdistan Region, it has not been officially recognized by the Iraqi government.
