President Salih: Halabja embodies the suffering of Kurdish people and all Iraqis

The President of the Republic, Dr. Barham Ahmed Salih, affirmed that the crime against Halabja embodies the suffering of the Kurdish people and all Iraqis.

President Salih said in a tweet, "Halabja, the deep wound in our conscience, embodies the suffering of the Kurdish people and all Iraqis, the crime that targeted everything alive on this valiant land."

"It is a painful human moment that generated the determination to fight injustice and tyranny and the right to a free and dignified life until its people today have become a symbol of redemption, steadfastness, advancement, and freedom," he continued.

34 years ago today, the city of Halabja witnessed the most heinous crime against humanity. The city was bombed with banned chemical weapons by the fallen Iraqi Baath regime. read more

The attack martyred between 3,200-5,000 people and injured around 7,000 to 10,000 and more, most of them civilians; thousands more died of complications, diseases, and birth defects in the years after the attack.
