In its statement for the 34th anniversary of the Halabja chemical bombing, the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) affirmed that they will intensify all efforts through party and government institutions to provide more services to Halabja and its people.

The PUK politburo statement said:

"Today we commemorate the 34th anniversary of the most brutal crime against our people. In a few seconds, the Ba'ath regime bombed the Halabja governorate with banned chemical weapons, leaving thousands of civilians martyred and injured. The vicious attack separated many families, some of whom are still waiting to reunite with their loved ones to this day, in addition to leaving many injured victims who are still suffering from their wounds.

The crime that the Ba'athist Chauvinists committed against the city 34 years ago was a grudge they held against the historical role of Halabja as in the movement of culture, civilization, and politics, the city raised and produced many patriotic religious scholars and intellectuals, great poets, and brave pen holders with a progressive and patriotic ideology who played a leading role in the uprisings and revolutions of our nation, especially in the new revolution, where the first units in the Sharazur regions and its surroundings held the arms of courage and defense against the injustice and oppression of the Ba'athists and called for continuing the revolution.

After more than three decades over the catastrophe, despite efforts to rebuild Halabja and the surrounding villages that had previously been destroyed and after the city became a governorate and many government institutions were established, until now, the Iraqi federal government has not yet implemented necessary procedures to formally introduce Halabja as Iraq's 19th governorate and its constitutional and legal rights have not been provided yet.

The noble families of the martyrs of the March 16 genocide, the noble and brave people of Halabja, we reaffirm to all parties on this anniversary that the PUK will intensify all efforts to heal the wounds that most of the people of the governorate still suffer from. Through party and government institutions, the PUK will strive to provide more services to Halabja and the people of the area to have a happy life, to forever end their tragedies, and to honor the memory and name of all victims of this catastrophe."

On March 16, 1988, the city of Halabja witnessed the most heinous crime against humanity. The city was bombed with banned chemical weapons by the fallen Iraqi Baath regime.

Over 5,000 innocent people from children, women, and the elderly were martyred on this day and more than 10,000 were injured.
