Kurdistan Region Education Ministry issues new decisions

Education 09:02 PM - 2022-01-31

The Ministry of Education in the Kurdistan Region obligated teachers and students to wear masks in schools, while parents were given the choice between school attendance or electronic studies for the second semester.

The ministry said in a statement on Monday that schools were closed recently for the first semester holidays and low temperatures, pointing out that the current period is witnessing an increase in the rates of infection with the Covid virus and the Omicron mutant, so the following was decided:

1- Requiring teachers and students to wear masks, and if any school does not abide by the decision, the Judicial Education Directorate must take legal measures towards that school.

2- Demanding parents to vaccinate their children over the age of 12, pointing out that the Ministry of Health in the Kurdistan Region is facilitating the process of taking the vaccine.

3- Parents of students are given the choice between sending their children to attend classes or completing the second semester of the study for the current academic year via the Internet after filling out a special form until February 10, 2022.

The ministry confirmed that these decisions come due to the high number of Covid cases for more prevention and for the safety of students and teachers.

School studies resumed on Monday after being closed recently with some schools having not finished the midterm exams due to heavy snowfall and low temperatures in the Kurdistan Region.

School studies began again in September last year for the new academic year in the Kurdistan Region. Last year, school studies were in a continuous on and off state and the Education Ministry adopted the Electronic system for a period of time due to measures taken against the covid virus.

According to Alan Hama Saeed, Minister of Education in the Kurdistan Region, 100,000 teachers have received one of the vaccines against the Covid epidemic.
